The fire and rescue trains developed by
Dräger Safety AG & Co. KGaA represent
a globally unique system for dealing with
rescue operations in tunnels. They are used
in situations where the scene of an accident
can only be reached by rail.
The trains are already in use by German
rail operator Deutsche Bahn, the Austrian
railway company ÖBB, and SBB, which
operates the Swiss rail network.
The fire and rescue train comprises a fire
unit and a rescue unit. The fire unit contains
personnel, power and fire containers, and
transports emergency crews directly to the
scene of the incident, where appropriate
action can be taken.
Independently of such operations, people
can be evacuated from the immediate danger
zone and kept safe in special rescue
containers.
Independent supply of breathing air
In case of need, the containers can be
hermetically sealed to prevent contaminated
outside air from entering. The breathing air
inside the container is supplied by on board
air tanks, and is purified and prepared for
re-breathing in a closed circuit. This gives
rescued persons and emergency personnel
the chance to spend several hours in the
safety of the container, without having to
rely on breathing masks.
Positive pressure technology and multistage
smoke retention systems reduce to a minimum
the amount of smoke which is brought
in from outside when a person enters the
container. To allow coordination of activities,
the trains are equipped to the customer's
specifications with operation control desks
featuring the very latest in technology. |

Measurement, communication and radio
equipment is on hand, as are thermal imaging
cameras.
Quick filling devices for respiratory protective
devices help boost the flexibility of the
rescue teams at the scene, while gas and
temperature sensors give timely warnings
of imminent danger.
The interplay between these special protection
systems enables fire crews to undertake
emergency and rescue operations in
tunnels, i.e. in conditions of poor visibility
due to smoke, at scenes which are difficult
to access, and when coping with long
escape routes.
