Oil-, gas- and chemical industry

Chemistry of the carbon compounds – Source of our modern world

Benzene? A by-product of crude oil refining, of course! Tires? A petroleum product! Nitrogenous fertilizer? One of the reactants is natural gas! Ibuprofen? This analgesic is manufactured using propene gas and toluene liquid. In turn, these substances are contained in the petroleum derivative naphtha. These are only some examples to illustrate the following: our modern world would be a completely different one without the use of crude oil, petroleum and natural gas. The reason is that both, oil and natural gas, serve not only as fossil fuels, but are also the basis for manufacturing a wide variety of different products in our modern world.

Following oil and gas production there is a long chain of different processing steps required for the finishing of products. In refineries and petrochemical plants, crude oil is processed into benzene, diesel, bitumen and many other products. These intermediate products and in-process materials themselves are the basis for many products in the chemical industry. Furthermore, oil and petroleum products are equally important for the pharmaceutical industry.

Independent of how crude oil and natural gas are used – safety standards always apply to production and processing which are designed to protect personnel, residents, the environment and to safeguard plants and manufacturing equipment.

To ensure maximum safety, Dräger offers a broad range of products and an extensive service program – including maintenance, servicing, training and the supply of accessories, all perfectly suited and optimally adjusted to individual requirements.

Whether respiratory protection, gas detection and measuring technology, rental equipment, safety training or breath alcohol measurement in the workplace – you can rely on more than 100 years of experience in the continuous development of highly sensitive and durable gas detection and measuring technology as well as innovative respiratory equipment.

There is a long sequence of many processing steps required before the fuel flows through the hose. At the beginning of it all there is the crude oil that is produced at a great expense – a process placing the highest demands on personnel and equipment: scorching heat under the desert sun, the harsh climate of the North Sea or arctic temperatures, noise, dirt, bad smells, a permanent danger of explosion due to flying sparks and hazards related to drilling through rock.

Whether jet fuel, plastic bags, fiberglass boats or car tires, all of these achievements of modern times would have been inconceivable without oil. However, a long sequence of conversion steps is required to achieve the finished product.

Chemical industry

Chemistry is incredibly diverse. Ranging from polyurethane (PU) foam used in dashboards and instrument panels to lacquer thinner, toy cars and Teflon® frying pans – hardly any other industry supplies so many different components for the manufacturing of so many different products.
